Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition

Monday, April 6 - Thursday, May 7, La Plata Campus, Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building), Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery

The Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition is a selected collection of artwork created by current CSM students. This work showcases a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, and graphic design.

Visitors are welcome during normal campus hours. The gallery is free to visit and open to the public.

 

Connections Literary Magazine Spring Reading: Dedicated to Neal Dwyer

Monday, May 1, 7 – 8 p.m. La Plata Campus, Center for Business and Industry (BI Building), Room 103/104

Come and listen to students, faculty, staff, and community members read their work in honor of the late Neal Dwyer, former professor of English and editor of Connections Literary Magazine.

Connections Literary Magazine is a regional literary journal published twice a year that features the very best poems, stories, artwork, and photography of Southern Maryland. Also included in each issue is featured material from visiting writers. Publication readings take place in December and May of each year.

 

Emily Creswick Writer's Process Series: George Howard Post

Tuesday, May 5, 4:30 – 6 p.m. La Plata Campus, Learning Resource Center (LR Building), Writing Center (Room 211)

George Howard Post was born in Charles County and raised in Benedict on the Patuxent River. His family has been in Maryland since the 1600s and in Benedict since the 1840s. Post graduated from the University of Maryland in 1971 with a degree in history and taught in the public schools in Saint Mary's County. He received his master's degree in 1978.

In 1814, over 4,000 British soldiers landed at Benedict, on their way to burn the White House and Capitol Building in Washington. Post's book, "Benedict on the Patuxent," was written for the 200th anniversary of these events in 2014. Post lives in Waldorf.

This is a monthly series for students, staff, faculty, and community members in which we bring local writers to the Writing Center to discuss writing processes. Events occur on the first Tuesday of the month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Writing Center.

 

Dance Performance: ‘Your POP or Mine?’

Student Honors Recital

Wednesday, May 6, 3 – 5 p.m. La Plata Campus, Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building)

CSM’s Student Honors Recitals occur at the end of the fall and spring semesters and feature students nominated by their instructors to perform. The recitals feature a variety of instrumental and vocal performers in styles ranging from traditional classical music to popular music.

Latin Ensemble Concert: ‘Noche Latina’

Wednesday, May 6, 7:30 p.m. La Plata Campus, Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts (FA Building)

Ritmo Caché is CSM’s Latin music ensemble and is directed by CSM Music Professor Dr. Stephen Johnson. The ensemble consists of CSM students and community members who share a love of musical styles as varied as salsa, cha-cha-chá, Latin jazz, and Latin rock. This year’s spring concert will feature a night of Latin salsa and dance music.

Innovation at the Velocity Center- App Development

Nenkoya Taylor is the founder of ShelfKorner, a platform dedicated to redefining how readers connect by blending virtual bookshelves, book discussions, and local bookstore discovery into one vibrant community.

 Attendees will explore the importance of confidence in bringing an idea to life and the role self-belief plays in entrepreneurship and innovation. Nenkoya Taylor will share his journey of transforming the vision for ShelfKorner from concept to reality, highlighting how confidence, persistence, and purpose fueled the development of a platform designed to connect readers and strengthen literary communities.

Participants will learn how to trust their ideas even when faced with uncertainty, overcome fear of failure, and navigate the challenges that come with building something new. The session will cover practical strategies for developing confidence as a founder, including validating your vision, embracing feedback, staying resilient through setbacks, and leading with authenticity.

Attendees will also gain insight into the mindset required to pursue ideas that challenge existing norms and create meaningful impact. Through personal experiences and actionable lessons, this discussion will encourage aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators to believe in their vision, move forward with conviction, and confidently take the steps necessary to turn their ideas into reality.

 

Southern Maryland Concert Band: ‘Classics and Clockworks’

The Southern Maryland Concert Band (SMCB), directed by David Monk, is a community-based concert band comprised of amateur and professional community members and CSM music students.

Details for graduates are available on the Graduation web page. A video of each commencement will also be available on the college's YouTube channel following the events.

All physical campus locations will be closed for in-person services in celebration of our graduates for the Commencement ceremonies being held at the La Plata Campus. Student support services, CSM business, and classes will operate virtually during this time.
