The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) honored the next generation of healthcare professionals during its Health Careers Readiness Recognition Ceremony on May 14, celebrating 85 graduates preparing to enter in-demand fields.

Family, friends, and supporters filled the auditorium with applause as graduates crossed the stage to receive their certificates.

CSM President Dr. Yolanda Wilson spoke about the tremendous impact graduates will have on their communities through direct patient care, administrative support, or wellness care. Reflecting on the college’s strategic priorities, Wilson congratulated the graduates on their accomplishment and their future success.

“The programs create access to career pathways, and your completion gives you momentum to move forward with your future goals,” Wilson said. “The credentials, knowledge, and confidence you carry from here can support your mobility into employment, future education, and continued growth.”

The graduates are entering a field experiencing rapid workforce demand, and the need for skilled professionals continues to grow. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare employment has increased by 20 percent in the past 10 years, making it the fastest-growing industry sector.

The CSM healthcare programs prepare students to serve, lead, and grow in health careers through rigorous training and hands-on clinical experience.

Vice President of Division of Learning Dr. Bernice Brezina said the rigor of the programs prepared graduates for the demands of the healthcare field.

“The certificates you receive are proof that you showed up, did the work, and met the standard the healthcare industry demands because patients are depending on it,” Brezina said. “Healthcare is a team, and you are now a part of that team, and the community needs you to be ready. CSM made sure you’re ready.”

Along with certificates, students received a pin representing their program. It symbolizes their readiness to serve as professionals and welcomes graduates into their chosen field.

Ellen Flowers-Fields, vice president of continuing education and workforce development, praised the students’ resilience and accomplishments as they enter a demanding but rewarding field.

“You’ve not only shown strength and dedication, but the very heart of what it means to be a healthcare professional,” Flowers-Fields said. “You’re entering a profession that offers personal growth and opportunity while making a lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of our community.”

To close the ceremony, Workforce Development Executive Director Kelly Winters encouraged the graduates to remember three important messages: Take care of yourself, remain curious and committed to learning, and remember why you chose this path.

“There will be difficult moments and challenges, but in those moments, return to your purpose,” Winters said. “The work you do matters deeply and often in ways that cannot be measured but will always be felt.”
