The Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. Center for Leadership at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is helping shape tomorrow’s leaders.

Established in 2019 in honor of Thomas V. “Mike” Miller Jr., Maryland’s longest serving senate president, the center offers training and engagement opportunities for CSM students, faculty, staff, and broader community to develop communication and leadership skills, and promote civic engagement and collaboration.

The center was recently featured on Maryland Public Television (MPT) to honor Senator Miller, who passed away in 2021. During his more than four decades in office, he is recognized for his longstanding advocacy for higher education in Maryland.

Former Miller Center Chair Denise Gilmer-Knudson spoke with MPT about its mission to engage with the community, offer leadership training, and programs offered through the Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. Leadership Academy, which fosters professional development and volunteer opportunities for CSM students.

Angelica Aguilar is a graduate of the Leadership Academy and CSM Class of 2026. She shared how her experience with the academy gave her the confidence to step out of her comfort zone, and the readiness to pursue new career opportunities. Aguilar is continuing her education this fall at Towson University.

Melanie Miller, daughter of Senator Miller, continues to support the Miller Center by engaging with CSM students and offering insights into leadership and public service. She spoke with MPT about Senator Miller’s legacy, and how collaboration and leadership skills will serve students throughout their lives and careers.
