Putts, Pours, and Petals: 10th Annual Sip and Swing Supports Student Success
As participants in the 10th Annual Sip and Swing took to the putting green, golfers made their way down the fairways during the College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Annual Golf Classic, all in support of student achievement.
The Sip and Swing offers golfers of all skill levels a chance to enjoy the sport while supporting student success. This year, 32 participants took part in mini-golf-style putting challenges led by golf pros from Swan Point Yacht and Country Club, who helped players get into the swing of things with a short putting lesson.
The Southern Maryland Women’s League (SMWL) has sponsored the Sip and Swing since the event’s inception in 2015. The organization is dedicated to supporting the Southern Maryland community through fundraising, special events, and volunteer efforts. Andrea Sanford, past president and current communications chair, said SMWL is proud to continue strengthening its relationship with CSM while supporting students as they pursue educational and career opportunities.
“Education is one of the most powerful ways we can help individuals and families build a stronger future,” Sanford said. “Our continued support of Sip and Swing is another way we can stand behind CSM and Foundation’s commitment to creating opportunities for students to succeed. Every SMWL member, past and present, is proud to be part of that mission and to invest in the future of our Southern Maryland community.”
The organization’s support of CSM students extends beyond the Sip and Swing. Since establishing its scholarship in 2009, SMWL has contributed more than $64,000 to scholarships for students who are single parents, or who are from a single parent household, and who demonstrate financial need.
Stepping off the green, participants were guided through a wine tasting and food pairing by sommelier Micheline Lopez-Estrada, who offered samples of sparkling whites and rosés while sharing details about their histories and flavor profiles. Lopez-Estrada, a past Foundation board member, selected the wines herself and ensured the event participants experienced an engaging session on the patio.
This year, the event also included a special addition where guests had the opportunity to create their own bouquets, sponsored by Norwood Cottage Florals. Owner and flower grower Mary Ellen Howard welcomed guests to select their stems and provided insight on seasonal flowers, arrangement tips, and more.
CSM Foundation Board Chair Samantha Stratchko ‘18 called the sip and swing a memorable event of fun, friendship, and philanthropy, with attendees leaving knowing their support will make a lasting impact on countless students’ lives.
“Beyond having an enjoyable experience, this event serves a greater purpose by raising critical funds to support CSM students as they pursue their educational goals,” Stratchko said. “These investments create meaningful opportunities for students, provide resources that encourage persistence and program completion, and strengthen the future workforce and communities of Southern Maryland.”
Together, the Annual Golf Classic and Sip and Swing have raised more than $1.6 million to support student scholarships and programs.
