Emily Creswick Writer's Process Series: Caitlyn Socrates 

Tuesday, September 1, 4:30 – 6 p.m. La Plata Campus, Learning Resource Center (LR Building), Writing Center (Room 211)  

Caitlyn Socrates was the inaugural Emerging Black Artist in Residence at Chatham University (2021-2022). An associate professor of English at the College of Southern Maryland, Socrates is a doctoral candidate at Duquesne University, where she researches African American literature and Black Food studies. She is currently writing a culinary memoir around her maternal ancestry.  Her first book, "Power in the Tongue" (Tolsun Books) debuted in 2022. Her work appears in "Midnight & Indigo," "Lost Balloon," and elsewhere.

This is a monthly series for students, staff, faculty, and community members in which we bring local writers to the Writing Center to discuss writing processes. Events occur on the first Tuesday of the month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Writing Center.

Gallery Talk and Reception: “Screen Time” by Yikui Gu 

Thursday, September 10, 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. La Plata Campus, Hank Willoughby Foundation Center for the Arts, Tony Hungerford Memorial Art Gallery  

"Screen Time" is a solo exhibit by Yikui (Coy) Gu that examines the prevalence of screened devices in our lives, and our relationships with those screens. How do they mediate and affect our virtual experiences, and how do they affect our interactions with each other? The fourteen works on exhibit probe the moments when a screen extends beyond its utilitarian function, and spreads into the realm of cultural artifact. The exhibit will remain open through October 9. 

Yikui Gu was born in Nantong, China and raised in the United States. He is known for his mixed-media autobiographical works - such as his Classic Yellow series - that explores identity, immigrant experiences, and the 21st century human condition through painting and collage. He has degrees from Long Island University and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His work has been shown internationally from galleries in New York City to Berlin.

Speed Lending and Business Resource Day 

Friday, September 18, 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Prince Frederick Campus, Building B 

The Small Business Development Center is hosting Speed Lending and Resource Day to connect business owners with lenders who are eager to hear your pitch and help your business secure capital.  

Local entrepreneurs will meet with multiple lenders during a series of short, one-on-one sessions designed to help you quickly explore your options, make connections, and get clear answers about what it takes to secure the money your business needs.  

The event will also feature the Credit to Capital seminar. Participants will learn ways to strengthen their credit and improve their financial foundation, learn to understand and monitor credit reports, and gather the proper records for seeking lender funding.  

The event is free to attend. Registration is open on the event website.  

Hawkland Gaming Festival 

Saturday, September 19, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. La Plata Campus, Center for Business and Industry (BI Building) 

Celebrate the Southern Maryland community’s passion for tabletop gaming while supporting student success. Hawkland Gaming Festival is a celebration of tabletop gaming, from classic board games to card games, dexterity games, and role-playing games.  

The festival will have three-hour time slots of hosted games between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Attendees can explore a game library available throughout the day, play alongside demonstrations of new games, participate in a puzzle swap, and browse vendors from around the area.
