“We are Stronger Together:” CSM Celebrates New AAWCC Chapter Members and Leadership

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) welcomed new leaders and member to its American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) chapter pinning, marking its renewed commitment to advancing leadership in community colleges.  

The AAWCC, established in 1973, is a national council that supports women in community colleges and empowers members to pursue leadership and professional advancement. The AAWCC-CSM Chapter, launched last year, brings that mission to CSM through mentorship, career development, and opportunities to connect with other leaders across the campus.  

CSM President Dr. Yolanda Wilson serves as the national AAWCC President. During the pinning ceremony, Wilson encouraged the chapter members to build on AAWCC’s long legacy of empowering women leaders, strengthening institutions, and changing lives.  

“It is through our shared vision of advancing leadership and supporting professional development from the national level to individual chapters that we’re reminded that no matter where you are organizationally, you can make a difference,” Wilson said. “We are still building networks, opening doors, lifting voices, and encouraging women to step forward.” 

The ceremony celebrated the installation of the 2026-2027 Executive Board. Each member pledged to lead with integrity, promote educational opportunities, and foster communication for women in higher education. 

Courtney Hawkins, who was sworn in as the new chapter president, recognized the inaugural executive board for getting the chapter off the ground. As the chapter enters its second year, Hawkins encourages members to build on that foundation and continue growing together.  

“Our outgoing leadership built a strong foundation for this chapter and created a culture of supporting one another, celebrating success, and encouraging professional growth,” Hawkins said. “As we look ahead, I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue strengthening our commitment to expanding professional development opportunities and supporting the next generation of community college leaders.”  

The 2026-2027 Executive Board includes:

• Thonya Ryan, Vice President 

• Joy Syring, Secretary 

• Yvette Motley, Treasurer 

The ceremony also welcomed several new chapter members, who received their membership pins and pledged to “support the purpose of advancing education, leadership, and opportunity for women in community colleges.”

Wilson encouraged the chapter to continue to step up as leaders, and to serve as mentors and sponsors for others.  

“Leadership is courage when you’re the only one standing, and it’s knowing that sometimes you have to walk through a door first so others can know the door is open,” Wilson said.  

The CSM chapter is open to all and holds meetings and events throughout the year for professional development, support, and fellowship, and collaborates with other regional AAWCC chapters. Membership is open to all CSM faculty and staff. AAWCC is an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community colleges.
