Josephine S. Williams memorial scholarship
CSM mourns the passing of our former colleague, Josephine (Jo) Williams. Starting at the college in 1966 as a professor, Jo went on to become Associate Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, and finally the Dean of Arts and Sciences before her retirement in 2000. Jo was a strong advocate for the arts at the college, in the community and in the state. She was instrumental in the development of the college’s Fine Arts Center and served as its executive producer for 14 years. Jo led by example and will be remembered as a valued administrator, teacher and friend.
Before her retirement Jo said of her tenure at the college, “As a long-time employee of the college, I have seen directly the effect of the college on this community. There is nothing abstract about the college’s contribution to the quality of life here. Alumni of the college occupy leadership positions in government, education, law, healthcare, technology and business. I can see them, name them, read about them, and I am only one of hundreds at the college who have touched such students over the years. The college is a formidable presence in the community for the ways it has fundamentally changed the lives of so many, opened career doors they never imagined for themselves, and allowed the community to grow and prosper. And now their children come to the college. What a great job this has been!”

Family and friends of Jo Williams have established a scholarship fund in her memory to offer financial assistance to returning adult students at CSM. Friends, former students, and colleagues are encouraged to donate to the Josephine S. Williams Memorial Scholarship. The Family of Jo Williams will match the first $5,000 donated to the fund.
