4th Annual MLT Program-Sponsored Blood Drive
The CSM Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program is hosting its fourth annual blood drive on Friday, October 28, 2022 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. in BI 113 and 113E on the La Plata Campus! Our donation goal is 30 pints of blood. Pre-registration is strongly recommended but walk-ins are welcome! MLT Program Students will be available to help walk-ins register and complete their health history questionnaire. Just look for the purple scrubs!

Medical laboratory professionals are a critical part of the healthcare team. Trained phlebotomists collect blood specimens and send them to the laboratory for analysis. Medical laboratory scientists and technicians analyze blood and other specimens to ensure an accurate diagnosis and safe treatment of patients in and outside the hospital.
Blood donations are collected by phlebotomists from the American Red Cross. Collected units are then processed by laboratorians at the Red Cross to create several blood product units from one donation of whole blood, perform tests on the unit to make sure it is devoid of infectious agents, and perform tests to identify proteins specific to the donor's blood that needs to match the recipient's blood for a safe transfusion treatment. The Blood Banking section of a hospital laboratory tests the patient's (recipient) blood for specific proteins to find a donor blood product unit that is safe for transfusion. Each selected blood product unit is then distributed to the patient's nurse for transfusion. Transfusions are highly monitored by the patient's doctor and nurses. The laboratory and clinicians work together to ensure the safety of the patient before, during, and after the transfusion treatment.
