The chat bench encourages people to come together, spark conversation, make connections, and build a sense of community.

Background

During President Wilson’s inaugural week, Dr. Larisa Pfeiffer and Michelle Christian attended a “Belonging” session led by Dr. Trenace Richardson. Two students shared their experiences on campus, and despite their differences, they both had one thing in common: loneliness.

They described wanting to make friends and build connections, but often going through entire days without speaking to anyone unless required in class. They admitted they weren’t sure how to start conversations or meet new people.

Larisa recalled seeing a unique idea at another event—brightly colored benches placed in outdoor spaces as a signal that anyone sitting there was open to talking. She asked the students if they’d use a designated “conversation bench” on campus. Both liked the idea, though they admitted they’d be more likely to join someone already sitting there rather than sit first.

After the session, one of the students approached Larisa and said, “The bench idea would work. I’d even donate money to have that bench here.” His enthusiasm underscored the importance of creating safe, welcoming spaces for connection—and that’s how the seeds of a Hawk Pitch began to grow.
