Getting the Best Boards
The board of directors bears responsibility for the nonprofit organization's health and in fact its very survival. As the legal governing body, it needs to establish plans and policies that keep the organization focused on its mission and that assure financial stability and sound management. This course covers the basic elements involved in achieving and sustaining a board that does all this effectively and so stands out for its exceptional performance. Students are asked to trace the relationship between levels of board performance and the organization's development potential. The course will also address the process of sustaining teamwork, defining the board's job with respect to fundraising, and incorporating strategic thinking into decision making. The course will concentrate on the principles of leadership and how understanding and embracing them empowers a board to act with a consistent eye to the future. Part of the discussion will include measures to sustain board exceptionalism through careful planning for turnover and succession. Students will be encouraged to share their experiences and/or expectations as board members.
