A Conversation with Poets Michael Glaser and Kate Lassman. April 13. 1-3 p.m. La Plata Campus, Center for Business and Industry (BI) Building, Room 103/104. Michael S. Glaser served as Poet Laureate of Maryland from 2004-2009. He is a Professor Emeritus at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a recipient of the Homer Dodge Endowed Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Columbia Merit Award for service to poetry, and the Loyola College’s Andrew White Medal. Glaser has edited three anthologies and published eight collections of his own work. Kate Lassman’s work has appeared in such journals as “The Avocet”, “Time of Singing”, and CSM’s “Connections”. Her new poetry collection, “Dawn Anyway” can be described as “nature poetry with spiritual underpinnings.” She is currently an instructor of English and writing tutor at CSM. April 14. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. La Plata Campus, Center for Business and Industry (BI) Building, Room 113. With the goal of examining and improving equity in education, the conference will feature hands-on activities to encourage collaboration and communication. The keynote speaker for the event is Janis L. Evans, author "Recollections About Race: Getting to the Roots and Healing," who will guide participants towards a fuller knowledge of the challenges faced by others. The conference is sponsored by the Dr. Maureen Murphy Distinguished Professor for Equity in Education Endowment. Free. CSM Jazz Festival Concert. April 14-15. 7:30 p.m. La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center, Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater. The Randy Runyon Project, led by CSM’s jazz and saxophone instructor, Randy Runyon, will perform on April 14. Benny C. Morgan Concert Series: Aleia Gonzalez Gulino, Guitar and Alejandro Avila Alvarez, Piano. April 15. 3 p.m. Leonardtown Campus, Building A, Auditorium. Paraguayans artists Aleia Gonzalez and Alejandro Avila will present solo and duet pieces from South America. The Benny C. Morgan Concert Series is sponsored by the CSM Foundation, Carroll L. The theme for this year’s conference is “Collaborative Communities: Building an Equitable Region,” a nod to the relationships and spirit of collaboration that have arisen against the backdrop of the upheaval of the past several years and strengthened nonprofits' capacity to meet needs and effect change. The conference will feature more than one dozen breakout sessions focused on topics of leadership, development, communications, planning and operations and management. Join us for a family fun day to learn more about science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM). Attendees can participate in hands-on STEAM activities, challenges, and demonstrations; learn about innovative technologies including robotics, and 3D printing; enjoy visual and performing arts exhibits and performances; and join in fun family activities including face painting, outdoor games, and a visit from the mobile library. Connections Literary Magazine is a regional literary journal published twice a year that features poems, stories, artwork, and photography of Southern Maryland. Student Honors Recital. April 28. 7:30 p.m. La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center, Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater. The Student Honors Recital features solo and chamber performances by CSM music students. This recital will feature a variety of contemporary popular music and standard classical repertoire for specific instruments and voice. Student participants are recommended by their studio teachers. Latin Ensemble Concert. April 29. 7:30 p.m. La Plata Campus, Fine Arts Center, Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater. Austin Fairley is a low brass specialist who has performed in the top ensembles at Shenandoah Conservatory including the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Big Band.
