CSM Announces 2023 Fall Semester Dean’s List

January 4, 2024

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has released its dean’s list for the 2023 fall sessions. Students who have earned 12 or more credits at CSM are eligible to be considered for the dean’s list. At the end of the fall, spring, and summer sessions, full- and part-time students who have completed at least six credits during the semester and have earned a term grade point average of 3.5 or better will be included on the dean’s list. CSM Division of Financial Services Team Gives from the Heart to Local NonProfits

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Division of Financial Services (DFS) continued its 14-year tradition of supporting an area nonprofit during this season of giving by gathering and donating supplies for those in need. This year, DFS employees donated items including hats, gloves, scarves, socks, fleece jackets, jeans, pajama sets, hygiene products, baby diapers, and a variety of food items to Lifestyles of Maryland, Inc.

ESFCU 'Warming Hearts and Hands' Effort Provides CSM Students with Winter Accessories

Educational Systems Federal Credit Union (ESFCU) provided College of Southern Maryland (CSM) students and their families with winter accessories and personal care items as part of its annual 'Warming Hearts and Hands' campaign. The event is supported by ESFCU Support Education Foundation, Inc. to bring hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and socks to students who may need a little extra help during the winter months.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) inducted 11 nursing students into Alpha Omega, CSM’s chapter of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society. The nursing students selected for this honor earned Bs or better in all of their nursing courses without repeating the courses and together completed a scholarly project related to the advancement of nursing as a profession.

New VanGo Bus Route Provides Free Transportation for CSM Students to Reach Regional Hughesville Campus, Move Between All Campuses

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) and Charles County government have joined to begin a new bus route that will transport students to CSM’s Center for Trades and Energy Training and Center for Health Sciences at the college’s Regional Hughesville Campus. CSM Robotics Team – the Talons – Rank 13th Worldwide; Earn Top Community College Status at Vex Competition

The College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) competitive robotics team – the Talons – wrapped up its 2022-23 season adding more world championship titles to its already full CSM trophy case. The CSM Talons Robotics World Competition team moved through the VexU Robotics World Championship last month to rank 13th in the world in the Skills category, with a total high score of 338, and 20th in the world in the Research category. Additionally, CSM was the highest-scoring community college in each of the events in which the Talons participated.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) returned to its La Plata Campus’ Physical Education (PE) Building for the first time since 2020 to celebrate its time-honored graduation ceremonies in front of a packed house during its 64th Spring Commencement May 12. Four-hundred, seventy-one candidates for graduation were recognized for earning 389 degrees and 142 certificates – included among them – 62 Charles County Public School (CCPS) seniors who participated in the inaugural Early College program to earn their General Studies Transfer certificates.

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) invites the community to a reading and conversation with award-winning author Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai at the La Plata campus March 29 at 1 p.m. The discussion with the author – who was born in Vietnam during the Vietnam War and through her writing explores the conflict and its aftermath – will take place on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, giving attendees the opportunity to reflect on how this period of history echoes through communities at home and abroad.

College of Southern Maryland President Dr. Yolanda Wilson appeared before a U.S. House Appropriations subcommittee March 23 to ask members of Congress to extend Pell Grant eligibility to quality, short-term workforce development programs. During the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Public Witness Day, Wilson explained that support of Workforce Pell Grants for students in short-term programs is critical.

CSM and Calvert County Public Schools Partner to Offer High School Seniors Early College

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) and Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) have partnered to launch a tuition-free early start to higher education by offering Early College for rising high school seniors. The pilot program in Calvert County is open to 20 students – five students from each of the county’s four high schools for the 2023-24 academic year.

Join Coders and Inventors to Transform Problems into Solutions at the CSM Velocity Center’s Climate Change Hackathon March 30-31

Registration is now open for College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Velocity X Climate Innovation Hackathon where participating teams will solve real world challenges by inventing, designing and testing solutions to solve the impact of climate change. The graduates chose the Nelson Mandela quote, “It always seems impossible until it is done” as their theme, and speakers returned to that idea again and again throughout the ceremony.

In total, 73 students completed programs to become Certified Nursing and Geriatric Nursing Assistants, Clinical Medical Assistants, Certified Dental Assistants, Phlebotomy Technicians, Nutrition Coaches, Personal Trainers and Paramedics.

CSM Early College Expands to Include all Seven Charles County High Schools for Rising Juniors and Seniors; Info Sessions Underway

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Early College partnership with Charles County public schools will expand to include all seven high schools in the next academic year and will include rising juniors, as well as rising seniors. The tuition-free program for the 2023-24 academic year offers an opportunity for high schoolers to experience being a full-time college student, save money and complete college credits while still in high school.

MACC Executive Director Dr. Brad Phillips to Deliver Keynote Address at CSM’s 24th Winter Commencement

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) will recognize 532 candidates for 428 degrees and 226 certificates during its 24th Winter Commencement ceremonies Friday, Jan. 13 at the La Plata Campus. The graduate’s range in age from 18 to 67 with 40 percent from Charles County, 27 percent from St. Mary’s County, 28 percent from Calvert County and the remainder from out of the area. Of the associate degree candidates, more than 23 percent will graduate with honors. The most attained degrees are Arts and Sciences, Nursing, Cybersecurity and Business Administration.
