Community Convening Strengthens Partnerships, Highlights CSM’s Role as Region’s Economic Engine
November 21, 2023The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) recently held a community convening at its La Plata Campus with more than 90 of Southern Maryland’s top business, government, military and nonprofit leaders and influencers to strengthen partnerships and collectively focus on improving upward social and economic mobility for students and local residents. Chief among the key outcomes of the “Connecting and Convening: Making an Impact Together” conference, was a better understanding that community colleges are more than learning institutions – they are regional economic engines.
CSM, Charles County Public Schools Expand Early College Program to Include Industry Certifications
November 15, 2023The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) and Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) have expanded the Early College Program for high school students to include career and technical education (CTE) opportunities. Three new technical certification pathways will begin next school year allowing students to participate in two-year programs to earn certifications in medical coding, pharmacy technician or electrical trades.
Educational Systems Federal Credit Union Presents CSM Foundation with $100,000

American Association of Community Colleges Visits CSM to Discuss Strengthening Region’s Workforce Pipeline
November 9, 2023Members of the American Association of Community Colleges leadership team spent the day Nov. 3 meeting with College of Southern Maryland (CSM) leadership to learn about the college’s workforce development initiatives; provide feedback for CSM’s new five-year strategic plan; and tour both the La Plata Campus and the Velocity Center in Indian Head. During the visit, the AACC team received extensive overviews of the college’s commitment to strengthen its business partnerships, build collaborative communities, and serve the southern Maryland region as the “hub’ of learning, credentialing, workforce development, and mobility for all students.

September 22, 2023All campuses of the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) will close on Saturday, Sept. 23, due to inclement weather associated with a tropical storm that will reach Southern Maryland overnight, Friday evening. All in-person classes and campus activities, including the Hawkland Gaming festival, are cancelled. Online classes will be held and online services will be available, as scheduled.

New VanGo Bus Route Provides Free Transportation for CSM Students to Reach Regional Hughesville Campus, Move Between All Campuses
September 13, 2023The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) and Charles County government have joined to begin a new bus route that will transport students to CSM’s Center for Trades and Energy Training and Center for Health Sciences at the college’s Regional Hughesville Campus. In addition, the new CSM Connector bus joins the existing bus lines between Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties and will assist students move between all CSM campuses via quicker routes.

Governor Wes Moore Appoints Pamela Cousins, of Calvert County, to CSM Board of Trustees
September 7, 2023Maryland Gov. Wes Moore appointed Pamela Cousins, of Calvert County, to serve the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) as trustee, effective July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2025. Cousins replaces Samuel C. Jones who passed away in 2022 after serving the college and its students for nine years.

CSM Robotics Team – the Talons – Rank 13th Worldwide; Earn Top Community College Status at Vex Competition
June 26, 2023The College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) competitive robotics team – the Talons – wrapped up its 2022-23 season adding more world championship titles to its already full CSM trophy case. The CSM Talons Robotics World Competition team moved through the VexU Robotics World Championship last month to rank 13th in the world in the Skills category, with a total high score of 338, and 20th in the world in the Research category. Additionally, CSM was the highest-scoring community college in each of the events in which the Talons participated.

May 25, 2023The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) announces that CSM Associate Vice President Ellen Flowers-Fields will be appointed vice president of CSM’s Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CWD) effective July 1. The establishment of the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development – which separates the CWD department from the Division of Learning – is part of a strategic organizational change approved May 18 by the CSM Board of Trustees to better serve the region’s workforce pipeline needs.

May 24, 2023The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) returned to its La Plata Campus’ Physical Education (PE) Building for the first time since 2020 to celebrate its time-honored graduation ceremonies in front of a packed house during its 64th Spring Commencement May 12. Four-hundred, seventy-one candidates for graduation were recognized for earning 389 degrees and 142 certificates – included among them – 62 Charles County Public School (CCPS) seniors who participated in the inaugural Early College program to earn their General Studies Transfer certificates.

This was the question that 25 participants from the College of Southern Maryland (CSM), local high schools and other colleges recently grappled with as they competed for prizes from a $12,000 pool at the VelocityX: Climate Innovation Hackathon at CSM's Velocity Center in Indian Head.

April 26, 2023“Not to be dramatic, but when I started at CSM I had two options: Give it all I had, or I wasn't going to be around much longer,” recalls James Thompson. At the time, he was working a minimum-wage fast food job and living without stable housing when his now-wife inspired him to think bigger. Today, Thompson is deputy public works officer for Naval Support Activity South Potomac, Indian Head -- the top civilian in the public works department.

CSM and Calvert County Public Schools Partner to Offer High School Seniors Early College
March 22, 2023The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) and Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) have partnered to launch a tuition-free early start to higher education by offering Early College for rising high school seniors. The pilot program in Calvert County is open to 20 students – five students from each of the county’s four high schools for the 2023-24 academic year.

CSM Early College Expands to Include all Seven Charles County High Schools for Rising Juniors and Seniors; Info Sessions Underway
January 9, 2023The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Early College partnership with Charles County public schools will expand to include all seven high schools in the next academic year and will include rising juniors, as well as rising seniors. The tuition-free program for the 2023-24 academic year offers an opportunity for high schoolers to experience being a full-time college student, save money and complete college credits while still in high school.
MACC Executive Director Dr. Brad Phillips to Deliver Keynote Address at CSM’s 24th Winter Commencement
January 6, 2023The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) will recognize 532 candidates for 428 degrees and 226 certificates during its 24th Winter Commencement ceremonies Friday, Jan. 13 at the La Plata Campus. The graduate’s range in age from 18 to 67 with 40 percent from Charles County, 27 percent from St. Mary’s County, 28 percent from Calvert County and the remainder from out of the area. Of the associate degree candidates, more than 23 percent will graduate with honors. The most attained degrees are Arts and Sciences, Nursing, Cybersecurity and Business Administration.
