CSM Appoints Ellen Flowers-Fields as Vice President of Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) announces that CSM Associate Vice President Ellen Flowers-Fields will be appointed vice president of CSM’s Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CWD) effective July 1. The establishment of the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development – which separates the CWD department from the Division of Learning – is part of a strategic organizational change approved May 18 by the CSM Board of Trustees to better serve the region’s workforce pipeline needs.

CSM Commemorates 64th Spring Commencement with 471 Candidates Receiving 389 Degrees, 142 Certificates

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) returned to its La Plata Campus’ Physical Education (PE) Building for the first time since 2020 to celebrate its time-honored graduation ceremonies in front of a packed house during its 64th Spring Commencement May 12. Four-hundred, seventy-one candidates for graduation were recognized for earning 389 degrees and 142 certificates – included among them – 62 Charles County Public School (CCPS) seniors who participated in the inaugural Early College program to earn their General Studies Transfer certificates.

Exceptional students from the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) recently gathered with their mentors, family and friends at the La Plata Campus 10 to celebrate their academic achievements. Professors heaped praise on their students—with passion and even, at times, poetry — sharing that the students they were introducing “gave [them] hope for the future,” “is the kind of student we all want to have,” and “made CSM a better place by being here.”

CSM MLT Coordinator Tiffany Gill to Serve as Commencement Speaker at Immaculata University

Tiffany Gill has attended many commencements at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) in her role as CSM’s Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program coordinator, looking on proudly as her students accept their degrees or certificates and head off to begin professional lives as medical laboratorians. But on May 12 when CSM celebrates it candidates for graduation during its 64th Spring Commencement ceremonies, Gill will be on a different stage performing a different role. She will be serving as the commencement speaker for the graduate program ceremonies at her alma mater, Immaculata University.

CSM Inducts Seven Nursing students into Alpha Omega Chapter of the Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) recently inducted seven nursing students into Alpha Omega, CSM’s chapter of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN) Alpha Delta Nu Honor Society. The nursing students selected for this honor earned Bs or better in all of their nursing courses without repeating the courses and together completed a scholarly project related to the advancement of nursing as a profession.

At the time, he was working a minimum-wage fast food job and living without stable housing when his now-wife inspired him to think bigger. Today, Thompson is deputy public works officer for Naval Support Activity South Potomac, Indian Head -- the top civilian in the public works department.

During the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Public Witness Day, Wilson explained that support of Workforce Pell Grants for students in short-term programs is critical.

CSM and Calvert County Public Schools Partner to Offer High School Seniors Early College

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) and Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) have partnered to launch a tuition-free early start to higher education by offering Early College for rising high school seniors. The pilot program in Calvert County is open to 20 students – five students from each of the county’s four high schools for the 2023-24 academic year.

In total, 73 students completed programs to become Certified Nursing and Geriatric Nursing Assistants, Clinical Medical Assistants, Certified Dental Assistants, Phlebotomy Technicians, Nutrition Coaches, Personal Trainers and Paramedics.

CSM Early College Expands to Include all Seven Charles County High Schools for Rising Juniors and Seniors; Info Sessions Underway

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Early College partnership with Charles County public schools will expand to include all seven high schools in the next academic year and will include rising juniors, as well as rising seniors. The tuition-free program for the 2023-24 academic year offers an opportunity for high schoolers to experience being a full-time college student, save money and complete college credits while still in high school.

MACC Executive Director Dr. Brad Phillips to Deliver Keynote Address at CSM’s 24th Winter Commencement

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) will recognize 532 candidates for 428 degrees and 226 certificates during its 24th Winter Commencement ceremonies Friday, Jan. 13 at the La Plata Campus. The graduate’s range in age from 18 to 67 with 40 percent from Charles County, 27 percent from St. Mary’s County, 28 percent from Calvert County and the remainder from out of the area. Of the associate degree candidates, more than 23 percent will graduate with honors. The most attained degrees are Arts and Sciences, Nursing, Cybersecurity and Business Administration.
