Connections Magazine
Connections Literary Magazine is a regional literary journal published twice a year that features the very best poems, stories, artwork, and photography of Southern Maryland.
Submissions are accepted from writers and artists throughout the region during designated open submission periods. Contributors may submit original, previously unpublished poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, visual art, and photography for consideration.
Also included in each issue is featured material from visiting writers. Publication readings take place in December and May each year.
Spring 2026 Connections Magazine Dedication
For over thirty years, Professor Neal Dwyer shared his love for literature with students at the College of Southern Maryland. Neal’s mantra, oft repeated, was “Poetry can and does save lives.” Learning to celebrate and live that truth was a gift he gave to both his students and his colleagues through his warmth, gentleness and generosity as a teacher, a mentor, a friend, and a poet.
To honor Neal and his love of literature, this spring edition of CSM’s literary magazine, Connections, will be dedicated to him.
The Connections editors are asking for submissions that pay tribute to Neal. Your submission can be a memory, a poem, a little story, an assignment that Neal made you proud of (if you are a former student); it can be an excerpt from a story or a poem that you know Neal loved, it can be art, it can be anything that you know will continue to carry on Neal’s long lasting commitment to loving and sharing literature.
Regular submissions will also be accepted, as we are certain this is what Neal would have wanted. As he would say: Just write.
Submission Guidelines
- Submissions are due by March 17.
- For the special issue, add “For Neal” to the subject header of your email if your work is for the dedication.
- For regular submissions, add the genre of your submission to the subject header: Poetry, Fiction/Prose, or Art/Photography.
- Email your submissions to Connections@csmd.edu.
General Submission Guidelines
- The deadline for the Fall publication is October 26.
- The deadline for the Spring publicaiton is March 17.
- Submissions are open to students, faculty, staff, and the community.
- Submissions are limited to five poems, two stories, one essay, or five black and white photographs.
- Simultaneous submissions are accepted.
- By submitting your work to Connections, you indicate your consent for us to publish that work in our print journal and on this website.
- Please inform us if your work is accepted elsewhere.
- Submissions must contain name, address, phone number, and a brief biographical statement.
- Email your submissions to connections@csmd.edu.
